Free Range Pork

Free Range Pork Our superb naturally reared free range pork is known for its superior flavour, succulence and superb crackling. We rear traditional robust rare breed sows including Gloucester Old Spot and Saddleback, which are crossed with our Duroc and Gloucester Old Spot boars to get the right combination of flavour and texture, without too much fat. Our pigs live happily outside where they can root and display natural behaviour to their hearts content in a rotation of paddocks with access to straw lined pig arcs when they wish. Our sows tend to farrow in these arcs where they make a nest. Our piglets stay with their mother until they are 8 weeks old when they are weaned and put into their own paddock as a family group. All our breeds are slow maturing so they stay on the farm until they are about 5 and 8 months old when we take the pigs ourselves to the small family run abattoir. Although we try to keep our pigs outside all year if the weather dictates we may bring them in to the shelter of our large, airy, straw lined barn in the winter months where they can root about in the straw and have plenty of room. This is to protect the pigs, but also prevents the erosion of our clay top soil. The topography of our farm combined with the Cumbrian weather is truly magnificent but it does present its challenges.
