Outdoor Reared Pork Our superb naturally outdoor reared pork is known for its superior flavour, succulence and superb crackling. The pigs come onto Mansergh Hall at 8 - 10 weeks old from one of James's old college friends, with the pigs being bred to our exact requirements. The pigs are then reared outdoors at Mansergh Hall Farm where they can root and display natural behaviour to their hearts content in a rotation of paddocks with access to straw lined pig arcs when they wish. Our breeds are slow maturing so they stay on the farm until they are about 5 to 8 months old when we take the pigs ourselves to the small family run abattoir. Although we try to keep our pigs outside all year if the weather dictates we may bring them in to the shelter of our large, airy, straw lined barn in the winter months where they can root about in the straw and have plenty of room. This is to protect the pigs, but also prevents the erosion of our clay top soil. The topography of our farm combined with the Cumbrian weather is truly magnificent, but it does present its challenges.
