NEWS FROM THE FARM

A busy month to come with shearing happening and although we use contractors to shear the sheep this is still a very busy time for the farm.

Pigs

James has been busy creating what has been named “pig paradise”. This is basically a field which is divided into paddocks for the pigs to roam around and root into the grass. They also have straw filled arcs to retreat as they want.
Pat, the saddleback sow had 11 piglets on 21st May. The next sow due to farrow is Poppy a large black due on the 9th June.

Crops

The turnips and kale has been sown and the grass and barley planted at the beginning of May are growing nicely. All these crops are to feed our stock over the winter months.

The Farm walk on the 26th May was enjoyed by all those who attended including many children who collected interesting items and took part in a quiz. 6 sows were also named: Suzie, Sally, Sausage, Simone, Sam and Sleepy.

Come and join us on…….

Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June

NW Finefood Lovers Festival

Westmorland Showground, Crooklands.

We have our own marquee and would be delighted to see you. We will be offering samples of produce from the barbeque. Please introduce yourself as we always enjoy meeting those interested in local food.

Asparagus

You may have seen in the local, national or international press that our asparagus crop was ploughed into the ground in error by a contractor. Although we obviously haven’t any of our own asparagus we do have available asparagus grown in Lincolnshire. Please call for more info on 015242 71397. Please note the asparagus is not organic.

Pick-your-own-Fruit

Underley Fruit Farm, near Kirkby Lonsdale is now open. Strawberries, Raspberries, Redcurrants, Blackcurrants and Gooseberries are grown. At the time of sending strawberries and gooseberries are ripe for picking. When you have picked your fruit relax and enjoy the views with a drink, cake or ice cream from the refreshment facilities. There is a children’s play ground and Do-it-yourself barbeque for you to cook organic sausages, burgers and steaks from the Mansergh Hall Farm Shop marquee (after the weekend of the 16th/17th June, as the marquee is in use elsewhere).
For crop information please call the dedicated line on 015242 72219. Please note: The fruit is not grown organically.
