Foot & Mouth Disease
August 2007
It is with utter disbelief that we write this statement, and
question how this been allowed to happen again? The aim of this
brief statement is to make you aware of how things stand with us at
Mansergh Hall on Monday 6th August 2007.
The current situation
Firstly, please order as normal this week as the outbreak has not
affected our current supplies. We need to continue as normal to
ensure our survival and we thank you for your support.
Our livestock is checked daily as a matter of course anyway, and
although we have no reason to believe the disease could have reached
our stock we are now looking for signs of the dreaded disease.
Furthermore, we have taken steps to prevent breaches of our farm
bio-security.
The forthcoming weeks
Our meat stocks will see us through for sometime so please
continue to order, we will update you as our stocks change. We will
still be able to source our organic fruit and vegetables boxes, so
please order these as normal.
At the time of writing we are not able to move any stock
anywhere, which includes to the slaughterhouse. As I have already
mentioned we are relying on the meat stocks we have on the premise
at the moment, and whilst this does not affect us this week, these
movement restrictions have already taken their toll on the following
weeks as we will not have stock to hang or dry-cure as we normally
would. Obviously, the longer this continues the worse the situation
will become.
We will keep you updated of the situation as it evolves, and once
again thank you for your continued support. We will not let this
beat us!
On a lighter note, Sam and James (Jim & Wendy’s daughter and
son-in-law) are proud to announce the safe arrival of Lilias (Lily)
Amanda Millar born on Saturday 4th August, weighing 7lb 13.5oz.
She’s beautiful!
NEWS FROM THE FARM
Well, the weather has certainly caused problems. We are waiting
to hay-time, but it is impossible to work on the land as it has just
been too wet.
We have managed to shear the sheep though, with the help of dry
spells and an undercover area to shear in.
In August we will be cutting the grass and barley grown in the
Meadow, the field you see as you approach the farm on the right hand
side. This is the first time we have grown grass and barley
together, the idea is to provide the stock with as much energy and
protein as possible from the feed we produce ourselves. This
grass/barley will be stored in a silage pit.
The weather has also taken its toll on James’ pigs. Petunia had 9
healthy piglets but because the weather was so wet the night they
were born 4 piglets sadly drowned. The land simply could not absorb
the water quick enough and it flooded into the pig arc they were
sheltered in. Although at the end of July 16 piglets were born to 2
sows.
News from the Shop
We now have a selection of fresh organic vegetables available in our
Farm Shop. At the time of writing we have new potatoes, onions,
celery, cucumber, carrots, tomatoes, cauliflowers and mushrooms.
Don’t forget we also have organic milk and free range eggs.
Date for your diary...
We will be at the North West Food Lovers Fair at
Stoneyhurst College, near Clitheroe, Lancashire on the 11th and 12th
August. We’d love to see you there!
It was great to see many familiar faces at the NWFF lover fair at
Westmorland Showground in June. It was good to hear peoples positive
comments both about our products and our display.Crops.
