We take care to produce and source the finest organic and
fairly traded produce from the North West of England. Our aim
being to offer the finest produce with as little affect on our
environment as possible.
We farm and process our produce organically to Soil Association
standards. As an organic producer reducing negative environmental
impacts and increasing positive affects is at the forefront
of everything we do. We wanted to make sure that this is done
within all our business practices i.e. in the office and transport,
so joined the Cumbria Business Environmental Network who carried
out an audit. We were awarded the first level award – Bronze
in April 2008. Everyone starts with bronze and we intend to
achieve the silver award before we attend the awards ceremony
later this year.
Environmental Policy Statement
Mansergh Hall Farm Shop is a family run organic farm shop
retailing and wholesaling organic produce both locally and nationally.
As an organic farm environmental impacts are of the utmost importance
to our business practices and we commit to continuous improvement.
The partners of Mansergh Hall Farm Shop recognize their responsibility
to manage environmental impacts of our activities, products
and services. We have assessed our activities and have identified
that our significant environmental impacts include:
- The production of CO2, other greenhouse gases & particulates
caused mainly by using diesel vehicles, refrigeration and
water heating.
- Waste from packaging.
- One of our most positive impacts is production to Soil
Association Standards, to which we adhere for our Organic
Certification P9189.
- We source products from local producers, as well as
“sharing” delivery, collection and distribution of products
to reduce emission, congestion, food miles and support the
local economy.
In order to promote good environmental practices, our policy
with regard the environment is as follows:
- To assess the significant environmental impacts of our
activities.
- To comply with the requirements of relevant environmental
legislation and approved codes of practice relating to our
environmental impacts.
- To reduce pollution, emissions and wastes to disposal
facilities. We will continue to re-use, recover or recycle
materials where practicable.
- To reduce the use of packaging, energy and supplies.
- To ensure our environmental responsibilities are defined,
communicated and understood at all levels within the business
and to raise awareness, encourage participation and train
employees and customers in environmental matters.
- To expect similar environmental standards from our suppliers.
- To communicate, co-operate and respond to the views
of interested parties on environmental issues, where this
is practicable and likely to result in an overall improvement
in environmental performance.
- To continuously seek to improve our overall environmental
performance.
Title: Partner of J. Hadwin A. Gorton and S. Gorton T/A Mansergh
Hall Farm Shop
Name: Amanda Gorton Date: April 23rd 2008
Who we are....

A family business!! The Hadwin family works as a team and
are committed and proud to providing our customers with the
finest organically reared produce. Jim, Amanda, Simon and James
are partners in mansergh hall organics.
Jim Hadwin
Jim is the boss!! What more can we say, other than it was
Jim's foresight back in the late 1980s to be trained by a local
butcher and provide whole and half lambs for the freezer that
started the ball rolling. Mocked by other farmer's at the time,
especially when the old dairy was converted into the farm shop
in 1995, there are many that have followed his lead into this
kind of diversification. We are very proud of what he has achieved
to date, and long may it continue!! Jim lives in Mansergh Hall
with his wife Wendy who helps with the business.
James Hadwin and Catherine Mason
Raised at Mansergh Hall James is the eldest son and now lives
in Kirkby Lonsdale with his partner Catherine. James is at the
heart of the business (and has been since he could walk) doing
a bit of everything but his main role is to run the farm, particularly
focusing on his pig farming. He works manually and in the office
for the mountains of paper work associated with farming these
days. Catherine has a full-time job elsewhere but can often
be found helping James on the farm and at our promotional events
such as shows.
Simon and Amanda Gorton
Amanda is the eldest of the Hadwin children and now lives
near Kirkby Lonsdale with husband Simon (our shop manager) and
2 year old daughter Emma. Simon is our shop manager and butcher
since 2001. Amanda has been involved with the business since
it started, helping her Dad since the age of 13 to pack the
lamb for the freezer, but having run the shop for a number of
years with Jim, her role is now to run the business from an
administrative point of view.
Samantha and James Millar
Samantha is the youngest daughter and now lives with her
husband James and their 9 month old daughter Lily, near Kirkby
Lonsdale. Sam now works part-time in the office one afternoon
a week with Amanda as well as working part-time for the Heritage
Lottery Fund. Both have a key role at our promotional events
such as shows, as well as behind the scenes.
Ben
Ben is currently studying for his A’ levels but is called
upon if he's needed either on the farm or in the shop - he's
a very useful person to have a round!
